Hey, I'm Josh Hallmark. And I want to thank you for listening to one of the Oaks podcast.
Remember this message from Isaiah chapter 61.
God takes the seeds of brokenness and turns them in the Oaks of righteousness. And that
was the year that you actually made some progress towards a destination. So I want to bring back my question here.
What do you want to grow in?
So, as you decide that you want to grow, you think of areas or you think of objectives you have like, if you look at the area of your relationship with God, you might be like, I want to feel connected to the Lord Jesus. That's a big, like area, I want to feel connected to the Lord Jesus, that would be like an objective, right? But you want to have a goal that actually gives you steps. So the goals are more than like, the marching goals are the specific things that you're doing. But the the greater objective, so when you think areas that you want to grow in, but then we want to actually take it further than that today, and have some goals, some actual steps that we take. So let's look at some goals. Instead of you know, regular people do goals, Oak people, they do smarter goals, and that's what we're going to learn about today. Okay, so if you see your handout, you got some blanks. You see those blanks. I'm gonna move these pretty quick, because we're gonna have some time here to actually work on these
Everybody got a pin?
You can read the whole article, I'm not gonna read it, I just wanted to
fill in this the smarter part. So Michael Hyatt check him out, go to his website. Um, Hey, I know you've probably heard of smart goals before, that's an acronym for some of the things that are on here, but he actually has changed them around a little bit. So if you've done this before, this is actually something a little bit different, but, but also pretty similar. But um, here's some guidelines. For you. This is just a prep for some time that we're gonna actually spend together here in a minute working on our goals. Number one, is that you want your goals to be specific. And what I love here is that he has he has a good example and a bad example. So you're going must identify exactly what you want to accomplish. And as much specifc specificity as you can muster, for example, bad saying I want to write a book. That's way too general. Right? Okay, well good example would be, I want to write a book proposal for the vision driven leader. He's selling his next book. Very good, right? This is from a blog, there's actually a link on that. I took some of the links out but, um, but you get it. I want to write a book about you know, a very specific thing. Or, I want to write an article I want to write a blog post. That's a specific goal. Alright. The next thing is am measurable. I'm sorry, I have a specific there. You can spell it if I spelled it right. specific number two You want it to be measurable. As the old adage says, You can't manage what you can't measure. If possible, try to quantify the result. You want to know absolutely, positively, whether or not you hit the goal. So being able to actually measure it allows you to know if you hit it, Rob,
how many deer you're gonna kill this year?
Oh, so you're gonna do scouting. So you're okay, so when Rob kills a deer, what if he were right in a goal? His goal would be I'm sorry, I didn't know you're trying to leave. Did I offend you? I'm sorry. Okay. Okay. So his his goal is to kill one trophy but that's a very specific, it has to be a certain size and This month you will secure one and then he wants to scout how many for climber?
He gets three and then Holly This is before he starts is
you won't get one today are you How many?
If you have any goals about getting venison you should talk to him because
he's gonna start his business next year.
No, I'm just kidding. But that's okay. How many measurable number three actionable? Oh wait, let's go back there is a good bad example earn more money than last year. That's a bad example. Earn $5,000 more this year than I did last year. That's a good example. Okay, next actionable every goal should start with an action verb. Quit Ron finish, eliminate rather than to Beaver I am be, like, be more happy. That's not a goal, right? Maybe that's an objective. That's something you know, you know, be more than that. And you know, when Paul wrote the book of Ephesians, he spends about the first three chapters talking about Be who you are bigger picture identity things. And the second half, he breaks it down into very specific, do steps action steps to take, like one of the action steps, he talks about how we're love, and then he goes on and says, Don't lie. That's where he starts moving into the action steps. So if you want to make a goal about lying, so I'm going to reduce my line by 100% this year, all right. Maybe 50% Okay, actionable next. This is where he deviates a little bit. Number four is risky, risky, smart goals. are risky. And he has a premise for this. Like normally when you see SMART goals, I think a is attainable. But he pushes it out there a little bit. He says SMART goals are smarter goals are risky. Let me just read it. A good goal should stretch you, but not too much. I go right up to the edge of my comfort zone. And then I step over. That's the whole idea that he has, you can go to find the article and click on More like Wikipedia.
He said if I'm not out of my comfort zone than I am,
I'm not thinking big enough. So bad increase sales by 2%. His point is, if your goal is to increase your sales by 2% that's not really enough to motivate. My goal is to lose two pounds. Okay.
That's not gonna help me right? But Instead,
here's a good example, increase sales by 10%. My goal is to lose 10 pounds. Oh, that might actually motivate me to get moving. Right? Because you don't wanna just have a goal, you want to have something that actually moves you in a direction, right? You want to start moving in that direction. so risky. You want it to be just beyond what you can do by yourself. You need a you and Jesus kind of goal, right? You don't need something that you can just manage on your own or something that won't even motivate you on your own.
And so
that's risky. Next, number five is time, keyed, time, key or timely. Every goal needs to have a date associated with it. When do you plan to deliver on that goal, it could be by the year, the year in December 31. Or it could be more near term more 31st a goal without a date is just a dream. Wow, I thought that was pretty powerful. Make sure that every goal is by a win date. Bad lose 20 pounds Oh, he used the pounds when they're good, lose 20 pounds by June 30. For you guys in our exercise today. Actually what I want you to do is by December 31 if it's losing pounds, you might want to make it by like December 15 because it's really gonna kick up after that. Just go ahead and add a couple extra so that you can make those back over Christmas. Okay.
And then he won't goals that are exciting.
Exciting. Second, write that down. You should be personally excited about achieving the goal. If this isn't the case, then You likely won't have motivation necessary to continue pursuing the goal when you encounter unexpected challenges, which you inevitably will. Remember, Jesus talked about the soil, the seed that fell on rocky soil. And it says because there was no depth of earth when the sun came up, it scorched the seed. And so it sprouted. And so here's the you wanna have something that you that you do care about, and that excites you. And this is why I think it's important to have time where you reflect on your life, where you actually think about your life. Think about your ways is that versus the wisdom of the prudence that they give thought to their ways. Because as you think you become, you learn to attach meaning to things. Reflection enables you to attach meaning to the things that matter the most. And as you think about when you start hitting areas, With the Lord created you, then you start hitting things that release excitement or passion. They start releasing things that you think like they're things that some of you get guys get excited about, that I don't get excited about right.
Now understand what I'm saying, and some things.
Some things like Matt Bergeron just looked over his wife, as I said that an airplane flew over. I figured you caught that he wants to be a pilot, right? He's, he's working on getting his hours in. I think that's kind of neat is something that like produces some, some excitement or some passion, because if there's not any, you're probably gonna quit after about the first three days, right? Okay, so you want to be exciting. And finally, you want your goals to be relevant. More Your goal is to be relevant.
Your goal should be relevant or aligned with your values. Your season in life and your other goals. I think this is tremendous wisdom, while you say in here, bad to start a new business at the same time you want to get a master's degree
tracking
or good do one or the other.
That's that's relevant. Okay. Think about it like this. Like
if you're a parent
of four kids,
like, I'll just throw one out for you guys. I really won't travel all over the world. But my, my season of life is not lend itself because of the responsibilities I already had. And so the way that I think about that, that's like one of my life goals. That's a big long term goal. I want to go to Thailand. I want to go to Finland. I want to go Disneyland I want to get not really something you guys do that can fit in your goal. That's okay. I want to go. There's a lot of places that I would like to see, I love the idea of being around other cultures, and just seeing other places and seeing I know God's heart so big for the nations. And, but that just does it. Look, when I look at my life right now where I am in lie, it just doesn't really fit for me right now. So if I make a goal like that, that's gonna be a goal that's not relevant to my season of life. So and let me just say something. I would even say it'd be borderline selfish for me to pursue that right now. Some of us have a big ministry idea. If it takes us away from our family. I question that your first ministry is to your family, right? And so this is the kind of thing I'm telling you, you want to make sure your goals, they fit within the framework. Now you know what i can Think about right now. I can think and Jen and I've talked about this, I want to make a lot of money so that I have the money to take our whole family traveling abroad. Because it costs a lot, right. And so there's there's I'm unless I'm raising money to go on mission trips or something, right, but, but that is one that there's racking, bring it back around to what is in my circle, you know, they say, What is your circle of concern, the bigger things that you're concerned about? And then there's your circle of influence? What can I do right here right now, even though that might be for a later time, right? So you want it to be relevant to where you are right now. And here's the verse that I mentioned, the wisdom of the prudent is to give thought otherwise, but the folly of fools is deception. Now, ask David and they're gonna hand out another handout. And we've actually got a little worksheet for you. We're going to spend about 10 minutes here on the worksheet and let you guys actually come up with that. Three or four goals on your own
and this is on cardstock so hopefully it'll make a little easier for you to write.
We talked about this last week when our best days to be ahead right?
When our best days to be ahead
in our lives to go from glory to glory.
Anna, would you mind going ahead and turn the music on force but then we're gonna get some goal oriented music going, actually I have no idea what's going on. But I want to encourage you right now take this sheet. And let's just take, we want to take about 10 minutes here. Now we just think about, here's some different areas. If you look, it says, think about the following areas, pick three or four goals that you would like to work on between now and the end of this year. So you think about a five month period, right? Like, what do you want to do between now and the end of the year? And here's the question, what do you want to grow in? You have to take it a step beyond that. There's some actionable steps, right? some actual things that you can do. Remember, if you look, there's a little cheat sheet there the bottom right things to say write write the phrase down your goal. And then after you write the phrase down, look at your little cheat sheet on the right hand side and judge what you write down against those and then modify, right? So you want to you want to do a two or three little quick look proofs. If you need to use the back of the page, you can write the sentence down and then you might need to go back and write it over if you can get the voicing, right. like Ted, you want to sound like something that you actually believe in something that you'll pursue something that sounds like you. And there's four spaces do do three or four here, the area's spiritual, how I want to grow my relationship with God. My main one that I've come up with, I've got this spot by the pond that I go sometimes to just kind of have like a quiet time, like some reflection time. I thought, Okay, I'm gonna try to do I'm gonna try start doing that twice a week. So I'll throw out one of my goals. So I want to go down and have some pond time. I've got a chair down there. I put my feet up. I take my journal. I want to go down the pond twice a week. That's like a special place kind of form. So there's, there's going to go twice a week.
I would say
for the next, the next couple weeks, at least for school stars.
I'd like to have pond time at least once a week for the rest of the year.
Okay, as my example I'm gonna keep working on. Alright, let's do that. Let's go ahead and let's work on the spiritual, physical, exercise intellectual, emotional. For some things you want to get worked out, maybe there's some steps that you can take to help you get to a better place emotionally, socially, that means your friendships, relationships, marital, parental, vocational, financial, and then hobbies or interest. And so just again, don't do all of them. Pick a couple of them
ones that are relevant to you
One more thought when we
had this picture of Jesus coming up with his hand on your shoulder and looking at the sheet with you. So just open your heart up to him while you're writing stuff down.
All right,
take just a second. Maybe just read over what you got.
By the way for some
for some goals
you might start more general
I got told you this book is about hiring. One thing I've been thinking about my life is learning to leverage myself more through hiring other people. And through using technology, you get more done with the same amount of me.
That's a bigger concept.
And so I'm having to think more in terms of how to make that actionable. But here, here's what I want to say about that. Even if you're like to amount of real specific, one of them's more general. I'm just I hadn't thought through it enough to get to the specific part yet. So there's a process. So okay, go ahead and write that. Keep working it through is what I'm saying. So you can get it down to some actual goals. All right. Would you stand with me We want to pray before we go
further We thank you
that you've given us this life, and we want to partner our lives with you. We want to partner with who we are with how you've created us. We want to partner with you in bringing about the goals and purposes that you have for humanity. Namely, we want to bring people to the Lord Jesus Christ. We want to see them rescued from themselves and from sin. Or do we want to see our own lives as filled with hope and peace, and we want to become oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor. Father, we ask you to help us to mature because we know that's what you're doing in the body of Christ. And we pray that we will mature as you would define maturity, Lord, in Jesus name. Amen. All right. Can you guys pray with me? Let's say together our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
Amen.
As some decorations I have added a couple more today that are COVID decorations from Psalm 91. Let's start with say this one the God is good. God sees me. God is with me.
Jesus will never leave me.
God is a good father.
God knows what I need before I even ask.
I am righteous because of Jesus.
I have the peace of God.
I can pray and see results.
God has given me vision for my life.
I'm pressing my pain into God.
God is meeting my needs.
I'm growing. I'm learning. I'm maturing in Christ. I am reflecting on my ways and God has given me wisdom. And now, I dwell in the shelter of the Most High and wrist and the shadow of the Almighty.
He will save me from the fowler snare and the deadly pestilence
and Cova not
I hope you'll have an awesome week I just wanted to clear
this overview. I love you guys, by the way.
My The Lord bless you, keep you make his face shine on you, and turn to you and be gracious to you, and give you this piece. I declare this in Jesus name. And by the way, God told Moses, I want to say this. The reason I do this, God told Moses, I want you to have the priests which were all priests in the new king, New Covenant, but he said, I want you to have the priests to speak this blessing over the people putting my name on them, we hold this. There's actually I can't think of it's not that that's like the devil. But this right here was kind of spot. This is a this is the symbol that priests actually used now today, they use this symbol. This is one of the Hebrew words for the name of God. And if you look over Jerusalem, That symbol is etched in Belize. It's crazy. But because God's name is on Jerusalem anyway, the Lord saying they will put my name on it when they when Jewish rabbis speak this blessing. They, they do like this and they say it will put my my name on them and the Lord's like when I see my name on them, I will bless them. That's why I declare something so, my Lord bless you keep your speciality turn to you and be gracious to give you peace a bless you in Jesus name.
Amen.
Go and be blessed. Walk in stop
goes wrong.

Walk in stop
goes wrong.
